Why Would You Use an MP3 Player in 2026?

For real, why would I recommend using an MP3 player in 2026? Ok so first of all, I’m not trying to sell you anything so I’m not gonna say you need one. As a matter of fact, you may have forgot that you actually already have one. Of course, I’m talking about your phone. We’re so used to streaming, it’s easy to forget that you can download music directly onto your phone and play it from there. But why would anyone wanna do that when there’s a lot of extra hassle involved in managing your own music library? Let alone the fact that you have to actually buy music (or take to the high seas) to get digital music files.

Ok so first of all, lemme say that.. we don’t call them MP3 players anymore. Basically hard drive space has got so cheap (AI is of course messing that up for us though) that it’s feasible to just put lossless audio files, basically WAV and FLAC on a portable music player. So yeah, if you didn’t know, all the cool (or un-cool depending on how you look at it) people are calling them Digital Audio Players or “DAPs” now. But what can a DAP do that a phone connected to the World Wide Web can’t do? Let’s get into it.

There’s no getting around it, but you’re not gonna beat the convenience of a smartphone connected to Spotify or Apple Music. I get that… but everything comes at a cost and that convenience definitely does. “But Spotify is only $13 dollars per month”, you say… and “Apple Music is even cheaper at only $11 per month”, you may also say. And that’s a small price to pay to have access to pretty much all music that’s ever been recorded, right? Well, that’s not the only thing you pay. You’re also paying “attention”. These apps track all of your listening habits whether you’re a paying customer or not. If you’re paying, you won’t see ads, but every time you listen to a song, there’s a record of that. That might not bother you, but it’s just something to consider. This data isn’t being leveraged against you right now, but there’s the possibility that it could be in the future. But I’ll be real, most people probably don’t care. It’s literally a thing to post your “Spotify Wrapped” at the end of each year to broadcast to the world what you listened to.

Aside from the whole, “streaming companies are spying on you” thing, one other small thing to consider is the fact that a smartphone is essentially a distraction machine. Over the past maybe 10 years or so, music has started to really take a back seat to other forms of media on the internet like short form video and streamers. I’m not hating on that, but it means music is now seen as more of something that kinda just goes on “in the background” of those things instead of being up front and center. Of course, some music definitely is background music, but it’s sad if music can’t be enjoyed in its intended format anymore because of the effects of algorithms on our attention spans. All this means even when you do try to just listen to a song and focus on it, it’s hard to actually do it with the constant dings and pings from other apps trying to tell you “hey come back!” “Look over here!”… It just really kills the vibe. And yeah, I know you can turn off notifications or put your phone on DND, and honestly, that’s a good thing to do if you don’t wanna get a separate device, but with a DAP, you can simply never even set that stuff up so that it doesn’t even have the ability to connect to the internet at all. Then when you have listening sessions, you can just leave the phone behind for a little bit while you let the music be the focus of the moment. Trust me, the experience is totally different.

I’ll close out by saying this. We take the internet for granted. It’s like, we’re never worried about it not being there because for a lot of people (Talking to you Gen Z and beyond), it’s just always been there. And it probably always will be. But there’s a chance it could turn off one day… or portions of it at least. Your favorite songs could just get taken down from streaming platforms one day, or altered in some way and there would be absolutely nothing you could do about it. I’m not saying that to try and scare you but, again, just something to think about. So, if you’ve got a device that just has music on it, you can be sure that as long as you have electricity, you can jam out. Anywhere, any time. I’m not saying it’s easy because, like I said, you have to actually acquire the files, upload them to the device (which can sometimes be a pain tbh), and maintain backups yourself so you don’t lose your data. So yeah, I admit it’s more work, but I do think it’s worth it for the better experience if you care.

Ok last point I’ll make for real. It’s just cool. Look at this… I’ve been wanting to get one for a while and finally did it. It’s a Hiby R-4 x Evangelion collab. Sure there are better ones out there with gold plated wires and all that BS, but this one is… it’s mine. I love it.

Attack of the Clones (808s, 909s, and 1000s)

Drum machines are like a drug to me. Let’s get this part out of the way… Pretty much every DAW has some sort of 808 and 909 kits built into it and every MIDI controller now comes with sound kits that probably includes some too. And if for some reason...

Why Did I Make My Own Website in 2026?

Ok, so why would someone bother making a website when there are already so many places online to establish your identity? So first of all, I'm an artist and feel like a website is an essential tool in showing what I do. If I meet someone and they s...
